If you have looked for a Mac screen recorder with automatic zoom, you have met Screen Studio. It is a polished, well-loved product and it popularised the style. Glidesmith works in the same space, so it is fair to ask how they differ. This is our honest take, including where Screen Studio is ahead.

Screen Studio has been on the market longer. It has a mature editor, a larger community, and features Glidesmith has not shipped yet, such as a built-in webcam overlay. If you need those today, it is a strong choice.

Glidesmith is free to record, edit and preview with no time limit. Free exports carry a small watermark and stop at two minutes; a one-time licence from $29 removes both. We do not sell a subscription and do not plan to: Glidesmith runs on your Mac and costs us nothing per recording.

On-device AI, next

The next major feature on our roadmap is AI cutting that runs entirely on your Mac: transcription with whisper.cpp, then editing the video by deleting words, with silences, filler words and repeated takes found for you. Many AI editing tools in this category do that processing on a server. Ours will not. This is roadmap, not shipping software, and we say so on the site.

Built on Apple's media stack

Glidesmith is written in Rust on top of ScreenCaptureKit, Metal and VideoToolbox, with no bundled FFmpeg. Preview and export go through the same GPU compositor, so what you see while editing is exactly what you get in the file.

Strict about input logging

For shortcut callouts, Glidesmith records keyboard shortcuts such as ⌘S and keys that type nothing, such as Return. It never records a letter or number on its own, so typed text, including a password typed on camera, cannot be rebuilt from the event log.
